Benson school district takes lead on finding day care solutions for area

Children play outside on the spacious grounds of the Northside Elementary School Monday at noon. District 777’s Board of Education is considering some of the land to add six classrooms that would allow it to expand its early childhood and day care to children in the area.

While Swift County, the City of Benson and Benson Public Schools have all discussed the pressing need for day care facilities in the community they have been unable to reach a consensus on how to go about meeting the challenge.

The costs of facilities and staffing, and meeting state requirements, are all hurdles that have to be cleared to move forward.

While the county and city see that a lack of day care spaces have a direct impact on economic development efforts in the area, as well as on the businesses that are already here, they have struggled to figure out what role they can, or should, play in addressing the crisis.

And it is a crisis.

Members of the KMS girls basketball team stretch before the beginning of practice last Wednesday in the senior high gym. In the middle giving instructions and talking about the previous night’s win over CGB is head coach Brady DeBaere.

The KMS girls basketball team opened up the season with two dominating wins over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (73-47)  Tuesday, Nov. 29 and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (66-50), Friday, Dec. 2.

Sam Gjerde had 32 points and Katie Krieger added 20 during the win over CGB, while Gjerde had 21 points and Hanne Tebben added 13 during the victory against BLHS.

The Saints do not have any games scheduled this week due to the KMS High School Band’s trip to Pearl Harbor so the next game for KMS isn’t scheduled until Thursday, Dec. 15 at home versus Dawson-Boyd, which beat RCW in its conference opener, 62-52....
