Gilbert Haugen, age 90, of Willmar, died Sunday morning, January 17, at Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home in Willmar.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 23, at Union Lutheran Church near Hannaford, ND.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 21, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church.
 
Gilbert Howard Haugen was born on December 9, 1925 to Bennie and Bertha Haugen in rural Hannaford, North Dakota.
 
Gilbert grew up on the family farm in Hannaford with his siblings, Burnell, Mervin and Richard. He attended Hannaford Public School. He continued to farm and work at the Melroe Manufacturing Plant in Cooperstown.

Thursday, December 31, 2015 at the age of 85. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday,
January 9, 2016 at 12:00 noon at the Big Bend Lutheran Church with Rev. Doris Weber
officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was one hour before the service
from 11:00AM to 12:00 noon at the church.

Benson, MN-Gary Martinson, 63, died on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. at the Redwood Falls Area Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 22, at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will be held form 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Church. Gary Lynn Martinson was born February 20, 1952 in Benson, Minnesota to Carl and Eva (Kelly) Martinson. He was baptized on April 20, 1952 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and confirmed on October 29, 1976 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. He attended Northside Elementary and Benson High School in Benson, Minnesota.

Gary was married to Donna Pfeffer on May 4, 1974. To this union, one daughter was born.

MBA Storm shut out by Windom, 7-0

After scoring eight goals in its previous game, an 8-0 victory over Worthington, the MBA Storm were shut out for the fourth time this season during a 7-0 loss at Windom Area, Saturday.  MBA, which dropped to 2-10 overall and 2-3 in the Southwest Conference, has scored 11 goals during its two wins, but only 13 in its 10 losses combined.

Lady Storm edge Windom in overtime

Hallie Watzke had a goal and assist during a 2-1 overtime win over Windom Area, Saturday.

The Lady Storm picked up its third conference win of the season with a 2-1 overtime victory at Windom Area, Saturday.  Earlier in the week, MBA dropped a 12-0 decision at Detroit Lakes last Tuesday night and lost by an 8-1 score to Luverne, Friday night in Benson.

KMS girls edged by Tracy, but earn close win over RTR

Samantha Gjerde pulls up for a jumper in the lane during the Saints’ 51-50 loss to Tracy Area last Tuesday night in Murdock.

A week that started off with a tough 51-50 loss to Tracy Area ended on a high note as the Saints rebounded with a 60-57 win at RTR, Thursday followed by a 80-31 rout of Hope Academy, Saturday at home.

The Saints improved to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the Camden North Conference with the two wins and now head into the meat of the conference schedule.  This week, KMS was set to host Minneota, Tuesday (yesterday), followed by a game at YME, Friday.

Hagen and Ahrndt lead gymnasts to two more wins

Mariah Ahrndt has been a consistent top performer for the gymastics team this season and has a high all-around score of 34.675.

The Benson-KMS-Montevideo gymnasts improved to 6-0 overall with a pair of wins over Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato and Long Prairie-GE-Browerville last week.

The Fighting Braves scored 133.2 points last Tuesday night during the win at Litchfield-DC, and then scored 131.725 points in easily beating LPGE-Browerville, Thursday night in Benson.

Benson girls fall to ACGC in one of best chances for win

The Benson girls basketball team went 0-3 to start the New Year, losing home games to Sauk Centre last Tuesday night (70-25) and to Atwater-CGC, Thursday (47-32) before losing at Minnewaska Area, Friday, 71-36.

City gets input on crossing plans

Benson City Manager Rob Wolfington and Stantec’s Peggy Harder talk with area citizens about options for improving safey and traffic flow through Benson’s three downtown crossings. The plan also looks at crossings to the east and west of the city.
The city will use input from Monday’s public meetings to choose an option to pursue in the coming months.

BHS graduate Eric Holtan’s musical group up for two Grammy Awards

1989 Benson High School graduate Eric Holtan will be headed to Los Angeles, CA, in February for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards where his classical music group True Concord Voices & Orchestra is nominated in two categories.

The group is competing in the Best Choral Performance category for Paulus: Far In The Heavens and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Paulus: Prayers & Remembrances.

“It is the ultimate validation to have a body of your peers, the 12,000 voting members of the Recording Academy, vote you as one of the top five in your category,” Holton said in a phone interview from Tucson, AZ, Monday. “It is very affirming and exciting.”
