Derald Leroy Hanson, 85, Benson

Derald Leroy Hanson, 85, died on Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Benson, Minnesota. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 18 at 11:00 am at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Interment will follow the service at the Lake Hazel Lutheran Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday June 17 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Marvin L. Lachelt, 73, of Litchfield

Marvin L. Lachelt, 73, of Litchfield, died  Monday, June 1, 2015 at Ecumen Emmanual Home in Litchfield.  
Visitation was held Saturday, June 6 from 4-7 p.m. at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home.
Marvin LeRoy Lachelt was born  July 23, 1941, in Boyd, Minnesota to John and Elsie (Neitzel) Lachelt.  He grew up and received his education in Boyd.  
Marvin lived in Texas for many years, moving back to Minnesota in 1991.  He was united in marriage to Allene Parks in 1989 in Texas.  Marvin was an over the road truck driver for 49 years.  After moving back to Minnesota, he worked for Litchfield Trucking for 24 years.  He loved to fish, hunt, and watch racing, especially Nascar.

John Swaneus Randt, formerly of Benson

John Swaneus Randt died in Alexandria, MN, on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the age of 90. John the son of Eilert and Ann Randt was born in Bunderhammrich, Germany on August 2, 1925.  At the age of two, he and his family moved to the United States.  He and his twelve siblings grew up farming in central Minnesota. While at a dance, John met Mabel Barnes and they were married on October 18, 1947. To this union five children were born.  When John was not busy farming and raising his family, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, deer hunting and splitting wood. He truly was a jack of all trades. He could rebuild boat motors, build houses and just fix anything. John also enjoyed fishing.  He shared this hobby with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. From John, they all learned the art of filleting a fish so that there were no bones.

Swift Fishing league has decent success on Long Lake

Long Lake by Cyrus was the lake drawn for week 2 of the Swift Fishing League on Thursday, May 21.  Weather conditions were much more pleasant than the first event.  At the opening horn, it was 65 degrees and sunny, with a 10 mph NW wind.  Water temps ranged from 55 to 58 degrees.  Long Lake has very few if any northerns, so as usual none were caught.  The 12 teams did catch many walleyes, but the majority of them were smaller than the 14” league minimum.  There were 23 walleyes brought to the measuring table that did make the minimum.  Largest walleye for a bonus point was 18.75” caught by Jeff Reuss.  Team White Fins (Jeff Reuss and Steve Benson) took first place with three walleyes from 14” to 18.75”, which gained them 10 points.  Second place with a league limit of 6 fish was team That’s A Keeper (Byron Giese and Jeremy Schauer) at 7 points.  They measured 6 walleyes from 14” to 14.25”.  Third place with 6 points was team Rod Busters (Jeff Erickson and Tom Hollingsworth) who brou

Szczur, Bergman, Berens, Hoium earn All-WCC for boys tennis

The Benson-KMS boys tennis team had another great season in 2015, finishing the year with  an 11-5 overall record, which included a 4-1 mark in the WCC.  Lac qui Parle-DB edged the Braves in a late-season match, 5-2, to earn the WCC title with a perfect 5-0 record.
The Benson boys tennis team was seeded fourth in the Section 6A Tourney and beat        fifth-seeded NLS in the first round, 4-3, before being swept by top-seeded Foley in the next round, 7-0.  Foley went on to earn the section title and a berth at state.
During the section individual tourney, Benson’s two doubles’ teams were eliminated in the second round, while the singles’ players lost in the first round.  Playing doubles for the Braves were Bradley Berens and Aaron Szczur, and Eric Hoium and Tyler Bergman, while playing singles at the section tourney were Kyle Ruppert and Kyle Wrobleski.

Ahrndt and Young among leaders of Benson baseball team in 2015

The Benson baseball team closed out the 2015 season with an 8-12 overall record and 4-9 mark within the WCC South.  The team was 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 at points during the season before going 3-8 in its last 11 games, including a 3-1 loss to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the Section 3AA Tourney opener.
The Braves did not score in double figures during its 20 games, but gave up at least 10 runs in five games.  For the season, Benson scored 87 runs, averaging 4.35 runs per game, while the opponents scored 113 runs, averaging 5.65 runs per game.
As a team, Benson batted .238 for the season, but Aaron Ahrndt was the only player who batted over .270.  The team also struck out 74 times and had 73 walks or hit by pitch.  Benson had four games decided by one run, going 2-2 in those games, and also had two games decided by two runs, going 0-2.

Isabell Foss, 84, of Hancock

Funeral services for Isabell Foss of Hancock, Minnesota will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock. Rev. Julius Miller will  officiate. Visitation is Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church  Wednesday.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
Isabell Elaine Swanberg, daughter of Peter and Margaret (Langsdorf) Swanberg was born  February 26, 1931 in Marysland Township in Benson, Minnesota, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Benson High School in 1949 and began working at Finger Hut in Benson.
