Two local businesses receive operating loans

To meet increased demand for its products, and to meet more stringent pollution and safety regulations, SpecSys came to the City of Benson and Swift County seeking $150,000 in funding last week.
The company was seeking $100,000 from the Benson Economic Development Authority (EDA) and $50,000 from Swift County’s Rural Development Authority (RDA.)
The county board approved the loan at its meeting Tuesday, April 15, with the Benson EDA approving it last Thursday, April 17.

Swift County without an official coroner

Swift County is currently without an official coroner. Dr. Matt Dammeyer, who left his practice with Affiliated Community Medical Centers in Benson earlier this month, submitted his resignation as the county coroner April 9.
Swift County Administrator Mike Pogge-Weaver told the county board of commissioners at their meeting April 15 that he had been in contact with the other doctors in the county and that at this time none wanted to be the primary coroner.
“We hope to have someone in place by the next meeting,” he said. “We may have to look outside the county for the primary corner.”

Winter makes brief return last week

With the 4.5 inches snow that fell last Wednesday, April has now seen 5.4 inches, 2.5 more than the average of 2.9. That snowfall put April 2013 in the top 10 in total inches of snow, but the total isn’t anywhere close to what the area saw in 2013.
Last April, the area saw a record cold month as well as 20.4 inches of snow. That snowfall shattered April’s old record for snow of 13.5 inches set in 1996.
So far this snow season that area has recorded 42.4 inches of snow, which is 1.3 inches more than the average of 41.1. Last year we received 65.2 inches of snow.
With temperatures warming in the days after the snow fell, with a high of 75 degrees reached in Benson Sunday, the snow disappeared quickly. However, soil temperatures still remain below 50 degrees, causing farmers to hold off on planting corn.

Boys tennis team opens up the season with two big wins

The Benson-KMS boys tennis team opened up the season with two big wins.  The Braves edged WCC foe, Montevideo, in the season opener last Tuesday night in Benson, 5-2, and then Benson won by a 7-0 sweep at Litchfield, Friday.
Benson has another two matches scheduled this week, starting with a home match against Long Prairie-GE, Monday, and a match at Minnewaska Area, Tuesday (yesterday).
The boys tennis team did not lose any players from last year’s team and, in fact, had just one junior on last year’s roster.  Add in a talented seventh-grade class, a strong foreign-exchange student, and the return of an injured player, and the Braves should be one of the stronger teams in the area this season.

Photo: Bradley Berens opened up the season 2-0 playing at first doubles with two different partners.
