Benson bus has mishap

by Reed Anfinson, Editor/Publisher

Early Friday morning a District 777 school bus went in the ditch along Minnesota Highway 29 north in Pope County. The bus driver was backing up to turn around when the bus’ back end entered the steep ditch and slid to the bottom at around 6:20 a.m.
The back tires caught wet soil and gave way as the driver was turning around, Supt. Dennis Laumeyer said Friday.

“As a result the driver was unable to move forward so the bus rolled backward into the ditch and off the road.  The bus was empty as it was just beginning the route.  Another bus was called to complete the route.”
Earlier it was reported that children were on the bus and had been transported. That information ended up being incorrect.

Public tickets for Target Celebrity Celebration claimed

People from the area signed up for next Tuesday's Target Celebrity Celebration.

People started lining up at the Benson Armory around 3 a.m. in hopes of getting one of the 500 tickets made available to the public for next Tuesday's Target-sponsored Celebrity Celebration. The doors opened at 10 a.m. with the line curling around the front of the Armory and stretching along the whole south side of the building. Late Thursday morning the line was gone, but people continued to show up in hopes of getting one of the tickets. By noon just over 500 tickets had been claimed.

Benson's Northside Elementary School won the event, which will feature Country Music Entertainer of the Year” Luke Bryan,  U.S. gymnast and 2012 two-time gold medal Olympic champion Gabrielle Douglas, actress Sophia Bush, and former Green Bay Packers’ star Donald Driver, in Target’s “Give With Target” promotion.  It was the first school to earn 10,000 Facebook votes, giving the school the top prize over all other schools in the United States. The school also won $10,000.

Swift County proposing $337,500 in ditch levies

Swift County is proposing $337,500 in ditch assessments in 2014 for needed repairs as well as to pay for repairs that have already taken place. The proposed assessments range from $2,500 to $100,000.
If approved, the assessments for 2014 will be $195,562 lower then the unusually large assessment of $533,062 for 2013. The high assessment for this year was not only intended to pay for planned repairs, but to bail some of the ditch systems out of persistent deficits.
At the end of 2012, there were 21 ditch systems in the red. It is projected that there will be only six in the red in 2014 based on current work and assessments planned.
Counties have three kinds of ditch systems: joint ditches, judicial ditches and county ditches. These ditches can also have laterals added to them as well as improvements made.
