Margaret Foster, Arden Hills and formerly of Benson

Foster, Margaret V. “Marny”
Age 68 of Arden Hills, formerly of Benson, MN, passed away June 27, 2013.  Preceded in death by brother, John Swanson. 

Survived by husband, Richard Foster; daughters, Ginny (Bruce) Wagner, Caty (Matt) Krauter and Missy (Max) Stockbridge; grandchildren, Ella, Blake, Mathis and Hudson; sisters and brother, Mary (Dave) Loveless, Tom (Colleen) Swanson and Elizabeth (Paul) Lippert; sister-in-law, Nancy Swanson; numerous nieces and nephews.  Memorial service 11 AM, Wednesday, July 3, with gathering one hour prior at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1900 – 7th St. NW, New Brighton.  Private interment.

Gregory Dean Walsh, 59, of Murdock, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at home.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock.  Visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Parish Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.  Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.

Avaran Kvistad, 19, of Crawford, formerly of Swift Falls

Funeral services for Avaran Kvistad, 19, of Crawford will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Crawford Community Building with Pastor Bill Bagley officiating.  Burial will take place at the Crawford Cemetery.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Crawford.

Avaron was born on March 24, 1994 in Alexandria, Minnesota.  His biological mother was Eva Bacca who was a foster daughter of Steve and Mary Jo Kvistad.  Eva placed Avaran up for adoption with a request that he be adopted by the Kvistad’s.

Avaron spent the first eleven years of his life in rural Swift Falls, Minnesota attending school in Benson.  He was involved in wrestling, hunting, and horseback riding.  Avaran traveled countless miles to High School and Little Britches rodeos to support his older brothers and sisters and became a competitor himself.  Through all of his travels Avaran endeared himself to everyone he met.

Jeanette Holmquist, 90, of Willmar

Jeanette Holmquist, 90, of Willmar, died Friday, June 21, at Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home in Willmar.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar.  A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Bethel Lutheran Church.  It is her wish that memorial gifts be given to Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church (Benson), Bethel Lutheran Church (Willmar), Rice Hospice or Bethesda Foundation.  Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.

Dominic J. McMahon was born in Clontarf, of Molalla, OR

Dominic J. McMahon was born in Clontarf, Minnesota July 28, 1923 to parents, Frank & Agnes McMahon. He was the seventh of eight siblings.  
Dominic grew up during the Depression and in his teen years turned his energies toward hard work on local farms, loading rail cars with hay, employed by REA, an electrical company in the Northwest, and worked in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon.  Dominic entered the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in the 2nd Infantry during WWII.  
After the war, he married Veronica H. Kouba and moved to White Salmon, Washington in 1948.  He worked in the woods, lumber mills and later specialized as a rock driller and powderman until his retirement in the late 70's.  
Dominic and Veronica moved to Molalla, Oregon in 1989 and enjoyed working around the house, entertaining family and snow birding in California, Arizona and Nevada in the winters.  He very much loved  his daily walks in the neighborhood.

Roger Elmer Avok, 68, formerly of Benson, recently of Kissimmee, Fla

Roger Elmer Avok, 68, a Vietnam veteran, welder, manufacturer and foreman, died June 13, 2013.
Roger Avok was born  August 30, 1945, in Benson. He was the only child of Elmer and Emily (Anderson) Avok of Clontarf.
He was baptized at West Zion Church by the Rev. Palmer, Oct. 21, 1945. He was confirmed by Pastor Severson at West Zion,  June 12, 1960.
Avok graduated from Benson High School in 1963, and was drafted into the Army, serving in Vietnam from 1965-67. He received his Honorable Discharge Oct. 29, 1967.
Avok returned home after his military service and worked in several jobs.
He married Judy Rodahl of Benson in 1968. In 1970, he hired on at Tyler Corporate Industries in Benson, where he spent most of his career, 27 years.
Avok was one of several men from the Benson area who moved their families to help establish a TCI plant in Yankton, S.D., in the mid-1970s.

Shirley Marie (Carpenter) Ogle

Shirley Marie (Carpenter) Ogle passed away in her sleep June 14, 2013.
She will be buried at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Princeton, MO July 20.
She was born April 24, 1922 and is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Ogle; two brothers, Roderick and G. E. “Spud” Carpenter; and her sister, Wanda Nathe.
Shirley was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota and lived in Benson for many years where she and her husband owned Howard’s Produce.
She and Howard retired to Florida and enjoyed the camaraderie at Pinewood Village Mobile Home Park in St. Petersburg for many years. Shirley lived with her daughter, Deborah and son-in-law, Roy Haggerty in Plymouth, MA at the time of her death.
She enjoyed golf, playing cards, computer games, and counted cross-stitch. She was well-loved by everyone who knew her.

The Benson VFW team

The Benson VFW team had three wins and one loss during the second week of action.  The VFW team, which had gone 1-3 to open up the season, swept Ortonville in a doubleheader in Benson last Monday night, 6-5 and 6-1, and then split with the Alexandria 15’s team last Tuesday in Benson, winning the first game 11-1 and losing the second 14-1.  Only the first game of each doubleheader counts for the official league standings.
Benson, now 3-3 overall, was set to host Willmar I at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 25 (yesterday) followed by a game at Madison, Tuesday, July 2.
During the doubleheader sweep of Ortonville, Benson won the first game in eight innings, getting the tying run in the seventh inning on a steal of home by Jacob Connelly, and then getting the gamewinner in the eighth inning on an RBI-single by Taner Gimberlin.

June 4, 2013
 
Chairman Fox called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM with all members present as well as County Administrator Mike Pogge-Weaver, County Auditor Kimberly Saterbak, and Payroll Officer/General Assistant Amanda Ness.
Chairman Fox asked if there were any additions to the Agenda, there were none.
06-04-13-01 Commissioner Peterson moved and Commissioner Rudningen seconded to approve the agenda.  Motion carried unanimously.
06-04-13-02 Commissioner Hendrickx moved and Commissioner Peterson seconded to approve the Consent Agenda which consisted of the Board Meeting Minutes of May 21, 2013. Motion carried unanimously.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that sealed bids for the Concrete Work of 2013 will be received by the Benson City Council at City Hall, 1410 Kansas Ave., Benson, MN 56215 until 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013, for the purpose of furnishing all necessary skills, tools, materials, forms and labor to furnish and install the following approximate quantities:
 
▪ 2,500 square feet of 4” flat concrete
▪ 300 square feet of 6” flat concrete
▪ 1,300 linear feet of curb
▪ 24 pedestrian ramps
▪ 48 truncated domes for pedestrian ramps
 
A Proposal Form may be obtained at the office of the Public Works Director, City Hall, 1410 Kansas Avenue, Benson, MN 56215, or by calling 320-843-4775.
Bids shall be honored during the 2013 season.
